We build good homes, secure jobs, health and education for everyone. We gave Britain hope again. We made the working class aspiration feel real for families like mine.
We built the common good, or at least we did until the 1980s. Suddenly, the common wealth we have created – this party has created for the many – was seen as an opportunity for the few. Homes, water, energy, transport – all sold off.

Burnham says he is 10 weeks into his new job – “and not all my predecessors have been able to say that.” Burnham says something is different in Britain now. People do not feel the country is pulling together. But if people worked together, “we could be unstoppable – and we will be”.
Burnham takes to the stage to the tune of All Together Now. He says that is his anthem. He thinks the nation needs to pull together.
Andy Burnham is taking to the stage. The Labour conference has resumed. The first speaker is Nadia Fawzi who says she would not be here if it was not for Andy Burnham.
When she was abducted by her father when she was a child, and taken to Libya, Burnham was instrumental in getting her back, she says. She says he is someone who gets things done. Labour announces cap on permission fees charged landlords Angela Rayner, the housing secretary, said in her speech earlier that the government will introduce a cap on the permission fees that can be charged by landlords. (See 12.17pm .) Labour has sent out an explanation as to how this will work.

Previous research has shown freeholders charged homeowners an average of £1,422 to enquire about installing double glazing, £887 to change the kitchen units, and £689 to replace the flooring. Some even faced charges for the pleasure of changing the blinds (£526), and installing a new front door (£410) ...
A cap on permission fees will also enable a clampdown on administrative fees, where landlords can charge for providing documents on request, such as building safety certificates, or for notifying them of a change in mortgage provider. A public consultation will be launched on the scope of what should be capped and the amount for each item.
